Abstract
This paper explores causes of the shrinking of vocabulary through the loss of fluent speakers and disappearance of context in daily life, and recommends means and rationale for the recording of richness and diversity in colloquial Gaelic to contribute to the revitalising of the language by drawing on 'material culture', hitherto generally poorly recorded in the standard dictionaries.
