Dr Emma Coghill, a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), is using Nobel Prize-winning technology to address a common complication experienced during angioplasty procedures. Her research explores the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a revolutionary porous molecular material, to improve patient outcomes and reduce treatment times.
I am a multidisciplinary scientist with a PhD in Biomedical Science and professional experience spanning biomedical research, nanomaterial chemistry, radiochemistry, and nuclear analysis. My career journey has taken me from developing nitric oxide-releasing nanomaterials for cardiovascular health, to adapting my expertise to radiochemistry at Dounreay, and now applying advanced biomedical techniques as a Research Assistant at the University of the Highlands and Islands. I specialise in developing and adapting laboratory methodologies — from platelet adhesion assays, cell culture, cytotoxicity testing, and myography through to chemical analysis, spectroscopy, ion exchange, titration, distillation, and radioactive material handling. Much of my work has required designing bespoke experimental solutions, validating new techniques, and ensuring rigorous compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Collaboration has been a consistent theme — whether working with industry and academic partners on radiation detection technologies to improve environmental monitoring, or partnering with healthcare and research teams to establish new methods for studying cardiovascular health. I also have a track record of knowledge exchange and training, helping others build confidence and skills in the lab.
