    ملخص

At the start of the new millennium many of the world’s fisheries are in a state of crisis as result of prolonged overfishing. This paper focuses on one fisheries dependent community (Shetland) and some of the initiatives being taken to try and ensure that its fisheries (and so the community itself) have a long-term sustainable future. These have included the establishment of a system of community ownership of fish quotas, the cooperative management of a controversial industrial fishery, and the development of a local management system for inshore shellfish fisheries.
