Consumption and production of nitrous oxide in the Golfe du Lion

نتاج البحث: Chapter

ملخص

Dissolved nitrous oxide concentrations were measured In the river
Rhone and Inmediata coastal waters In summer and winter, and across
the Golfe du Lion during winter. In addition, atmospheric
concentrations were determined. The levels In the air ( 369 +/- 39.5
) were high and variable across the Golfe compared to reported
global values, and the source appeared to be terrestrial. The river
Rhone surface waters were often supersaturated as a result of
nitrification, although bottom waters were undersaturated due to
sediment denltrificatlon. The water column In the Golfe du Lion
possessed two distinct zones; a central area with elevated nitrous
oxide content formed as a by-product during nitrification, and an
area of undersaturation which closely follows the estuarIne plume.
The mechanism for this consumption is discussed. The results show
that in addition to in situ production of nitrous oxide in the water
column there is also a significant atmospheric input of terrestrial
origin.
