Investigating whether a One Health approach can be used to address load reduction of pharmaceuticals under the recast Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive

The Scottish Government is currently considering the extent to which the recast Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (rUWWTD) should be incorporated into Scottish legislation. Article 8 of the rUWWTD requires an 80% reduction of 10 pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater discharged from wastewater treatment plants. The overarching aim of this project is to explore if reductions in pharmaceuticals can be achieved through a One Health approach combining healthcare interventions with wastewater treatment.
