Research Expertise
Our understanding of marine mixing processes has lagged our understanding of ocean circulation. My research focuses on studies designed to elucidate marine mixing processes. Specifically, internal wave generation by tidal flow over topography and subsequent decay to turbulence; in the Deep Sea (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Wyville-Thomson Ridge), in Shelf Seas (Malin Shelf, Iberian Shelf, West Spitzbergen Shelf, Antarctic Shelf), and in Coastal waters (NW European and Arctic fjords).
I have hands-on knowledge of most physical oceanographic measurement techniques, including: AUVs, Gliders, velocity micro-structure, mooring work, ADCP (hull mounted and moored), SeaSoar/Scanfish, CTD. Over the last decade I have expanded the UK’s ability to measure marine turbulence through instrument developments designed to equip emerging measurement platforms with shear and temperature microstructure sensors (APEX floats, AUVs and Autonomous profilers). I have co-developed modelling tools designed to better understand exchange processes in fjords, and use 3D hydrodynamic models to complement analysis of sparse data sets (MITcgm, FVCOM).
